The
book of Second Kings begins where First Kings left off.
From Ahaziah to Hoshea in the first 17 chapters to
Hezekiah through Zedekiah in the last 7 chapters, this
book spans a 286 year period. As with First Kings, the
Book of Second Kings author is unknown but is thought to
have been Jeremiah or one of his prophetic contemporaries.
Second Kings records both the destruction of Israel and
its captivity by the Assyrians along with the destruction
of Judah and its captivity by the Babylonians. Within the
first 17 chapters, the dark period in the northern kingdom
of Israel is interrupted only by the ministries of the
prophets Elijah and Elisha. At the end of Elijah's
miraculous ministry, Elisha is installed and authenticated
as his successor. His ministry is characterized by
miraculous provisions of food and life. God demonstrates
His gracious care for the nation and His concern for any
person who desires to come to Him through Elisha's
ministry. From chapters 18 to 25, Israel's nineteen
unrighteous kings and 1 righteous king rise and fall. Only
one kingdom, Judah, remains in these 7 chapters which
makes for easier reading. First and Second Kings were
originally one Book in the Hebrew Bible, but the
Septuagint divided it into two parts which became the
"third and fourth kingdoms".
